Sidequest: Inside Stumbleweed – A Detroit Studio Visit
Block prints, bandanas, and creative space in the winter chill.
February in Detroit is no small thing - slush, silence, and the kind of cold that keeps you indoors. But upstairs in Laura’s studio, the weather shifts. Sunlight pours in through the second-story windows. It’s warm, and she allows me to snap away to my hearts content.
Laura is the creator of Stumbleweed—a printmaker, candlemaker, and collector of good ephemera. This is a photo collage from my visit: bits of her studio life, a peek into her textures and timing.

What’s in the Studio: Curated Chaos

Out into the Snow: A Walk Through the City
We needed some fresh air and sunshine, and Mabel, Laura’s dog, needed an opportunity to get her skeddadle on. So we walked.

Back in the Studio
As the day wore on, she got into carving a commissioned piece, a logo for a local company. She was testing out some material and determined it wasn’t going to be what she was looking for, scrapping the project for the day. I snapped a few more photos before we lost all of the light.

I’ve been watching Laura’s work develop over the years, and I find it’s “anarcho-strawberry” aesthetic to be delightfully crass. Laura is funny, but serious about the statements she makes. You can find her work at PureStumbleweed.com (A clever play on Michigan’s well-known tourism tagline Pure Michigan)
